In this book she mainly talks about her influences that helped her become the women she is today. One of her main influences was her mother. Her mother never limited her, let her do any sport or activity she wanted, her mother was also very supportive, hard working to provide for her kids, she was strong willed, encouraging, and willing to sacrifice for her daughter. Latifah never let negative images of women in the media, or images being portrayed in entertainment to define her. Queen Latifah stated that her mother believed in her, when she didn’t believe in herself, that’s the reason no one can shake her confidence now.
Queen Latifah and I have a lot in common; the main reason is because both our mothers are our biggest influences. They are both supportive, hard working to provide for their children, and instilled in us at a young age that “You are beautiful and talented” and never to let anyone tell you differently. Both mothers taught us to look to God for help if you can’t find it. We both used negative images in the entertainment of black women, to motivate us to do better. One difference between Queen Latifah and I is that she has used her influence and power to help other young women, and I have yet to do so, but am on my way.
